Original lithograph after “Nu aux oranges” (1953), work composed of a large drawing of a nude with a brush in India ink and cut-outs. Among the last works of Henri Matisse. A photograph from the time shows the drawing hanging on the studio wall with the three fruits fixed partly to the sheet and partly to the wall, among other large drawings. In the final version, Matisse arranged the oranges on either side of the figure, counterbalancing its hieratic nature and the verticality of the whole. They create a circular movement that envelops the figure and increases the feeling of space. They also color the light produced by the large black-on-white drawing. Matisse considered it “a very good thing. »
This lithograph is part of a set of works that remained unpublished when Matisse died. These works had been presented in the tribute issue to the artist published by the magazine
VERVE 35/36 in 1956. The Succession Matisse took the initiative to produce a high quality lithograph edition of the most beautiful works of this series.
