Sonia Delaunay-Terk (Ukrainian, November 14, 1885 in Grazisk - December 5, 1979 in Paris), painter and designer, founded the Orphist movement with her husband Robert Delaunay and other artists. The artist studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe between 1903 and 1905, before moving to Paris and studying at the École de la Palette, where she was influenced by the works of Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Fauvism.
The name "orphism" clearly refers to Guillaume Apollinaire's 1908 poem Orpheus, which deals with pure poetry, a kind of "luminous language". For Sonia Delaunay, “the destruction of the object seems to her to have to be accepted as definitive” (Pierre Francastel). From then on, she stands out from the static and monochrome side of cubism by drawing her inspiration no longer from external objects, but from light itself, procreator of dynamism and form.
During her career, she has received numerous distinctions, including the Legion of Honor. In addition, her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and she has the honor of being the first female artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre. His work has been exhibited worldwide, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Reina Sofia National Museum in Madrid.
